Namibia Reflections: Long Roads, Cold Nights, and Wild Beauty
There’s something magical about the stillness of Namibia.
Maybe it’s the long, empty roads that stretch like ribbons across the desert. Or maybe it’s the way the sun scorches the days and the cold sneaks in as soon as it sets. Either way, Namibia stays with you — in the dust on your shoes, the roar of silence across the plains, and the unexpected beauty around every bend.
This was a road trip unlike any other.
The Start: Grunau's Quiet Charm
We kicked things off in Grunau, a quiet little gem just outside the main town. The guest farm we stayed at felt like the middle of nowhere — and that’s exactly what made it perfect. No noise, no rush, just stars, silence, and space. The kind of place that resets your nervous system.
Windhoek: Not Every Stop Is a Highlight
To be honest, Windhoek didn’t leave the best impression. Our accommodation experience wasn’t great — I won’t name and shame here, but let’s just say it didn’t deliver. That said, we did find a gem: Joe’s Beerhouse. Quirky decor, lively atmosphere, and great food. If you’re ever in Windhoek, don’t skip it — it's a solid memory-maker in an otherwise forgettable stop.
Otjiwarongo & Etosha: Animals, Dust, and Crocodiles
Next up: Otjiwarongo — an interesting town that put us within reach of Etosha National Park. The park itself? Wild and vast. Think endless gravel roads, bushland that hides everything and nothing at once, and animals that appear like magic when you're just about to give up. No lions for us this time (though I swear I saw paw prints), but the sheer size of Etosha is enough to leave you awestruck.
Also in Otjiwarongo — a surprising highlight: the crocodile farm tour. It was equal parts informative and entertaining, thanks to a truly excellent guide who brought the whole experience to life. Our accommodation here was cozy and comfortable, making it a great base to rest and recharge.
Swakopmund: The Golden Chapter
Then came Swakopmund — and honestly, this was the peak. We fell in love with the vibe instantly. From delicious meals at food trucks to camel rides on the dunes, this town brought the energy we didn’t even realize we were craving.
The sunset at the beach? Breathtaking. The kind of view that quiets your thoughts and fills you with quiet gratitude. Swakopmund had that rare mix of natural beauty, fun activities, and laid-back charm that just works.
Day Tripping: Walvis Bay & Henties Bay
We took a day trip out to Walvis Bay, where the landscapes turned surreal. Saltworks that looked like pink alien planets, the dramatic beauty of Sandwich Harbour, and a quick detour to Henties Bay to catch sight of a weathered old shipwreck along the coast. Namibia doesn’t run out of surprises.
Maltahöhe: Blink and You’ll Miss It
Our stop in Maltahöhe was brief but memorable. It’s the kind of town that barely registers on a map, but the little place we stayed at had such a warm, homey feel that it deserves a mention. Sometimes the smallest places leave the coziest marks.
The Longest Drives & the Final Stretch
From Maltahöhe, we set out on what felt like the longest drive of our lives to Fish River Canyon. The journey tested our patience (and playlists), but the scenery slowly shifted from dunes to canyons, and that alone was worth it. Standing at the edge of that vast, jagged canyon makes you feel tiny in the best possible way.
Then came the final push — back to the South African border. It was a long, quiet drive through endless landscape. We arrived late, tired, and grateful. Surprisingly, the return border crossing was much easier and quicker than the one heading into Namibia.
What We Missed (But Not Forever)
No road trip covers it all. We missed Lüderitz, Sossusvlei, and the Kolmanskop Ghost Town — places I was really hoping to see. But you know what? That just gives us a reason to come back.
Final Thoughts
Namibia taught me to slow down and take it all in. To enjoy the silence. To be okay with hours of nothingness on the road, because around the next bend might be zebras, or dunes, or a pink lake.
It’s not a country you visit once. It’s a country that sits quietly in your memory until you start planning your next trip — just to see what you missed the first time.
Until next time, Namibia. You were unforgettable.
